During today’s U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation Subcommittee oversight hearing on the United States Coast Guard budget, Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Committee, expressed her anger over the lack of action, accountability and transparency by Coast Guard leadership regarding revelations of a secret investigation into decades of sexual assault allegations at the Coast Guard Academy and called for an Inspector General (IG) investigation to bring transparency to these reports.

Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Chair of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Fisheries, Climate Change and Manufacturing, which oversees the Coast Guard, sent a letter to the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Linda Fagan, seeking answers and accountability for the mishandling of a previously undisclosed, years-long investigation into sexual assault allegations in connection to the Coast Guard Academy. The Committee learned of these reports that had previously been withheld from Congress and the public through its routine oversight role during a briefing from the Coast Guard.

Today, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation passed the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2022 that would reauthorize the Coast Guard for Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023. U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Committee, Ranking Member Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Subcommittee on Oceans Chair Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) introduced the legislation last week and the bill now heads to the Senate floor, as amended by 52 bipartisan amendments.
