WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, sent a letter to the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Neil Jacobs, demanding answers and accountability after NOAA cancelled approximately $300,000 in grant funding for the Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC). As a result, the AEC will stop providing real-time seismic data to deliver timely and accurate tsunami warnings for the entire west coast by the end of November.

Tonight, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the bipartisan Coast Guard Reauthorization Act of 2025 that would reauthorize $30.45 billion for the U.S. Coast Guard for Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026. The bill was introduced last month by U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Chair of the Committee, as well as Sens. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.). The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Today, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, chaired by U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), voted to advance several presidential nominations to the full Senate with strong bipartisan support, including unanimous approval of Michael Whitaker to serve as Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration.
