Hutchison Statement on United Airlines and Continental Airlines Merger

Hutchison PortraitWASHINGTON,
D.C.
– U.S. Senator Kay
Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) released the following statement concerning the
announcement of the proposed merger between United Airlines and Continental
Airlines:

“I understand the need for
companies to remain competitive and viable in a very tough industry and will
examine this proposed merger on its merits. I intend to thoroughly review and
monitor both the short and long term effects of this merger on both the Houston economy as well as on the competitiveness of the U.S.
aviation industry as a whole.

“The proposed merger with United
raises understandable concerns about the impact on the Houston area economy as well as broader
issues with competition and choice. Continental has been an integral part of
the Houston economy for generations, in terms of
both the jobs it provides and the unique role it plays in supporting the
traveling public and the Houston
business community with reliable and affordable travel.

“I will be monitoring the proposed
transaction as it undergoes regulatory review to make sure these issues are
considered.”
