Wicker Urges the Advancement of Federal Data Privacy Legislation

September 9, 2022

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, today released the following statement regarding his efforts to advance the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA). This statement follows the White House’s recent listening session on tech platform accountability, which listed the Administration’s principles for reform on this issue.

“For years I have advocated for data privacy legislation that would protect Americans of all ages and provide a national standard for businesses to operate,” Wicker said. “I am glad to see the White House shares that view. Vast amounts of personal and digital information is collected on Americans every second. That information often has been misused and abused.

“For the first time ever, there is bipartisan, bicameral legislation that would finally protect consumers against these threats.  House and Senate Democrats have the ability to advance this proposal, but unfortunately they continue to disregard this country’s need for a uniform federal data privacy framework.  I strongly urge my Democrat colleagues to consider the safety of the American people and pass the American Data Privacy and Protection Act.”
