Cantwell Statement on SCORE Act Advancing in the House
July 23, 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, responded to the House Education and Workforce Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee advancing the SCORE Act, a massive giveaway to the largest schools in the wealthiest conferences that leaves athletes and small and mid-sized institutions behind.
“Saving Olympic sports is going to take more than just allowing the biggest universities with the biggest boosters to always be in the conference playoffs,” said Sen. Cantwell. “This legislation rolls back athletes’ rights established less than 30 days ago, undermines women’s and Olympic sports, squeezes small and mid-major schools, and makes the big schools richer, more powerful, and less accountable. It’s a no-brainer why Attorneys General on both sides of the aisle, players associations, labor groups, and fans want to see a different game plan on NIL.”
A broad range of stakeholders are speaking out against the bill -- including athletes, coaches, athletic conferences, fan coalitions, labor groups, the Olympic Committee, professional players associations, and State Attorneys Generals.
