This hearing will examine the importance of the Panama Canal to the American economy and our national security, focusing on the canal’s role in U.S. trade, the challenges of capacity limitations and rising fees, and the potential dangers posed by the involvement of China and other foreign powers.

John Curtis (R-Utah) recently reintroduced the Informing Consumers About Smart Devices Act, bipartisan legislation that would require the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to create reasonable disclosure guidelines for products equipped with audio or visual recording components that are not obvious, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers. Many consumers don’t realize a growing number of household devices and appliances come with cameras and/or microphones capable of recording them and their families. Some devices also include Wi-Fi capability to transmit data without their knowledge.
