June 18, 2025
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.), Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, convened a subcommittee hearing titled “On the Right Track: Modernizing America’s Rail.”
The hearing focused on the current state of U.S. freight and passenger rail networks, which move energy, goods, and people across the country. The hearing also explored ways to modernize the networks, including with emerging technologies, to improve safety, increase efficiency, and ensure the systems can meet future demands.
“Rail is the backbone of our transportation system and economy. It connects communities, moves freight efficiently, and supports thousands of jobs. From small towns to major cities, rail keeps America moving,” said Sen. Young.
Sen. Young also highlighted the critical role Indiana plays in the network.
“With more than 4,500 miles of freight and passenger rail, Indiana plays a central role in national logistics. Projects like the South Shore Line and West Lake Corridor show how public-private partnerships can deliver big results, enhancing safety and regional connectivity,” said Sen. Young.
