Rockefeller Statement on Industry Plan to Refocus USF Subsidies Toward Broadband Deployment

July 29, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Chairman John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV issued the following statement after six of the nation’s largest telecommunications providers submitted a proposal to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that directs subsidies from the Universal Service Fund toward broadband deployment:

"Universal service is a cherished principle.  In years past, it has meant that this nation connects every community with basic phone service.  But in the years ahead, it must mean that we connect our communities with advanced broadband and wireless service, too.  I am pleased that the FCC has taken up the task of reform.  I look forward to reviewing the new industry reform plan and taking a hard look at what it means for the consumers who ultimately must be the real beneficiaries of our universal service policies."
